About the Clerkship

The Hon. Nikki DeShazo (ret.) and Edward V. Smith III Probate Clerkship was established in 2016 to honor both Judge DeShazo’s distinguished career as a lawyer and judge with the Dallas County Probate Court and her husband, Edward V. Smith III, and his distinguished legal career. Mr. Smith passed away in 2018. He was respected by his peers for his leadership and professionalism. He served as the Chair of the Dallas Bar Association Probate Section and received the professionalism award from the Dallas Bar Association.

 

The purpose of the clerkship is to provide up to an 8 month clerkship (Sept 1 – Apr 30) for 2L and 3L students at SMU Dedman School of Law, Texas A&M University School of Law, and the University of Dallas College of Law with the goal of mentoring a law student to advance their knowledge and experience of probate law.

Qualifications

1 / Must be a 2L or 3L student at SMU Dedman School of Law, Texas A&M University School of Law, or the University of Dallas College of Law.

2 / Students must be in good standing, with an acceptable GPA, at their respective law school.

3 / An essay, one page, on why you desire the clerkship and what your expectations are for the clerkship.
